![]() ![]() Different configurable apps offer different capabilities, and you can add more than just a scale bar when needed. Using embed or a configurable app is an easy way to add a scale bar to a map when desired in your story map. Once saved, open the app and use the URL as described in Step 5. Rather than using Preview you can also complete configuring the Minimalist app, then save it. Step 6. Paste the URL copied in Step 4 into the Web page link. In the main stage content, choose Web page, instead of Map. Step 5. In the Map Journal builder, add a new section. Click Preview, and the map will open in the default Minimalist configuration in a new browser or tab. Locate and select Minimalist from the gallery. ![]() See Quickly share your map using an app for more details.įollow these steps to use Minimalist to add a map with a scale bar to your story map. But one of the conveniences of using Minimalist is that you can add it using Preview, since the default configuration includes all you need. You can fully configure the app and save it, then add it to the main stage using its URL. The default configuration includes only zoom tools plus a scale bar. Minimalist is designed to showcase a map using a very simple user interface. Calculate the ratio that you will then need to use to resize the image to mini scale (1 inch per 5 foot grid square or 300 pixels per inch resolution). You can use any app, but a great choice for this purpose is Minimalist. Within Photoshop, Gimp, or a similar image editing program, measure the pixel dimensions of an individual grid square in whatever map you’d like to resize. Option 2: Use an app – MinimalistĪnother option is to publish your map using an app configured to include a scale bar, then add the app to the main stage of your Map Journal. The main stage with the embedded map will include a scale bar. Complete building your story map, and save. Paste the HTML copied in Step 4 into the Embed code input. In the Map Journal builder, add a new section. When finished, click Copy to capture the HTML to the clipboard. You’ll likely want to keep options minimal, but will want to add a scale bar. Select the map options you want to include with your embedded map. And, it will use an extra iframe tag which the Story Map builder will complain about. When embedding a map in your story map, this is not needed. Share the map publicly to enable and click Embed In Website. Map embed code is typically used to embed a map in a website, but it can also be used to add a map to your story map with configured options, including a scale bar. If you do want to include a scale bar, here are two options to consider. This will add the map, but without a scale bar. Using the Map Journal builder, maps are typically added to the main stage by choosing Map in the Content section, then selecting the desired one. This tutorial uses the Story Map Journal, but the techniques described here can be applied in other story maps. ![]() When you want a map with a scale bar, there are a couple of options you can use. (This post is also available as a Story Map Tutorial.) At large scales (zoomed in) the scale is accurate across the visible map. Another reason is that at small scales the scale bar is ambiguous the scale will differ within the visible extent of the map. Why? The scale bar may be unneeded for your story, and the map and its context may provide all you need. Of course, you must adapt the values if your hexes are not 1" wide. When you add web maps to your story map, the scale bar is omitted. With your 1" wide hex you can fit an A4 sheet 297/25.4 = 11 hexes times 210/29.3 = 7 hexes in landscape mode and 210/25.4 = 8 hexes times 297/29.3 = 10 hexes in portrait mode (values rounded and no margin). On the other hand if you want to fit the paper, you first have to take the margins out (see your printer doc). Now to calculate the best paper size you'd need : width number of hexes x 1" (or 25.4 mm), height number of hexes x 1.1547" (2.93 mm).Įxample : if your map is 20 hexes wide and 12 hexes high, the map will be 20" (508 mm) wide and 13.86" (352 mm) high so an A2 sheet would be needed, but not filled. To print you have to check the Scale Factor radio button, put 1" in the Paper Distance box and 3' in the Drawing Distance Box. The hex's height is then 1.1547" (29.3 mm) because the height of a regular hex is width/cos(30°) assuming the hex is turned so that a node points up. Say you want your hex to be 1" (25.4 mm) wide. I assume that's the map's scale, but how wide should an hex be on paper ? Posted By: Highland_PiperI'm doing 1 Hex = 3 feet ![]()
